I was sorry to hear more sad news from the UK last week. A good friend of mine, Arthur Montford, who was a well-known football commentator from Scottish Television, has passed away at the age of 85.
Arthur was always neutral in his commentaries but he did have a personal leaning towards Greenock Morton FC. I believe he spent some years on the board of directors at Morton in later life and, after stepping down from that, he became honorary vice-president of the club.
I played golf with Arthur at Buchanan Castle Golf Course at Drymen, where Arthur was a member as he lived at Balmaha, near Loch Lomond. We both had a mutual friend, who was the local postman in that district, a gentleman called Jimmy Vickers.
Jimmy and I laid a surface water drain on Arthur’s property at Balmaha during a closed season when I was with Hearts in the early sixties. Arthur and Jimmy thought the effort involved would help keep me fit.
I was very sad to hear that Arthur had passed away, as he was very much part of the Scottish football scene in the sixties and seventies.
